CBD or cannabidiol is becoming increasingly popular due to its many potential health benefits for both humans and pets. Here are some things pet parents need to know about CBD and what natural substitutes and alternatives can work best for their furkids.
What is cannabidiol?
CBD is one of the many chemical compounds found in the controversial cannabis or marijuana plant. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), another compound found in cannabis, CBD is not psychotic and would not cause the sensation of feeling “high” to your furkids.
According to American Kennel Club Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Jerry Klein, there’s anecdotal evidence from pet parents suggesting it can treat pain and help control seizures. Furthermore, Dr. Klein stated in this article that CBD is also used because of “its anti-inflammatory properties, cardiac benefits, anti-nausea effects, appetite stimulation, anti-anxiety impact, and for possible anti-cancer benefits,” while also mentioning that there are currently no conclusive data to support this.
However, many organizations, including the AKC Canine Health Foundation, are currently studying the possible use of CBD as a natural remedy for many dog-related diseases and to possibly further improve their health.
Alternatives to CBD in dog food
As pet parents, we only want to provide what’s best for our furkids. Although marijuana is legalized in several states here in the US, pet parents will want to know more about CBD first before giving it to their furkids. If you want your furkids to enjoy the same benefits and remedies that CBD provides, check out these three superfood alternatives:
- Basil or rosemary
Like CBD, basil and rosemary contain high antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can provide relief to dogs suffering from arthritis. What’s better, both herbs are good sources of antioxidants that protect your furkids from damage against free radicals.
- Omega-3
Omega-3 can do so much more than just keeping your furkid’s skin healthy and coat shiny. Recent studies show that cannabidiol can be naturally produced inside the body with the right amount of omega-3 fatty acids. According to this study, omega-3 derived endocannabinoids play a role in managing pain, inflammation, and even cancer.
- Chamomile
Chamomile can help calm anxious furkids. Like CBD, chamomile acts as a gentle sedative for cats and dogs who are suffering from anxiety and depression.
