The British Shorthair looks like a cute teddy bear with its large round eyes and dense coat. Read on to find out if this breed is right for you.

Personality and quirks

British Shorthairs are calmer and quieter than other shorthair breeds. They aren’t too fond of being carried. However, British Shorthair cats are very affectionate. They are quick to become attached to their pet parents. Also, they can get along well with dogs, rabbits, and birds.

Cats of this breed are also very smart and can be trained to do a bunch of tricks. But take note that they can be clumsy sometimes. They are not fit to do tricks that require too much body movement, like jumping.

Tales of origin

According to The Cat Fanciers’ Association, the British Shorthair is among the oldest breed of English cats. Their ancestry is identified to be similar to that of the domestic cats found in Rome. They are used to be renowned for their strength and hunting capabilities. However, modern breeds are now more relaxed and would prefer to stay indoors.

Caring for your British Shorthair cat

British Shorthairs are healthy cats. They do not have breed-specific health issues. With proper care and diet, they can live for 14 to 20 years.
