Also known as the ‘Persian Longhair’, Persians are a breed of cat with elegantly long and thick fur, cute and round face, and a short muzzle. If you want to live with a sweet, gentle, and tame cat, this breed might be an ideal companion for you.

Personality and quirks

Because of their quiet and calm personality, Persian cats love to live in serene and secure environments. But if you shower them with love and affection, they can easily adjust to lively and fun-loving households.

This breed also tends to be shy and reserved. So they might not be able to get along well with children, dogs, and strangers at first. But if you give them enough time to adjust and adapt, they can be sweet and loving to them, too.

Tales of origin

According to The Cat Fanciers’ Association, Persians are one of the most popular cat breeds in the US. These cats are believed to be an old breed from Iran (Persia). There are also reports, however, that these cats were spotted in Europe in as early as the 1500s.

This breed’s popularity boomed during the 1900s and they are among the favorite breeds in cat shows. The continuous breeding of Persians resulted into two types: the traditional doll-face breed and the ultra-type flat-face breed.

Caring for your Persian cat

Persians are quite high maintenance cats. They need daily grooming to keep their fur beautiful and free from tangles. Unlike traditional breeds which are generally healthy, flat-faced ones may suffer from breathing difficulties and may be sensitive to heat. It’s better to let them live in areas with cool weather, or in homes with air-conditioning systems.

Also, according to Vetstreet.com, this breed has several hereditary health conditions that breeders need to watch out for. This includes polycystic kidney disease (PKD), progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), bladder stones, cystitis (bladder infections), and liver shunts.

Keep your Persians healthy. Give them regular exercise, healthy and appetizing meals (like Wishbone!), and take them to your vet.
