Abyssinians are playful, elegant-looking cats with a slender body, beautiful arched neck, large pointed ears, and a long tapering tail. Read on and discover if this cat breed is right for you.
Personality and quirks
These cats are well known for their intelligence, paired with a playful and outgoing personality. Despite their active nature, Abyssinians are quiet cats. They do not really meow. Instead, they do soft, chirrup-like vocalizations.
Also, they are a clingy breed of cat that loves constant attention from their pet parents. They are very friendly and affectionate to people, much like how dogs are. They are an ideal companion for people who have time to spend with one.
Tales of origin
According to The Cat Fancier’s Association, Abyssinians are among the oldest known breed of cats in the world. Although they resemble the cats from Egyptian paintings and sculptures, these cats are not from Egypt. Nor they are from Ethiopia, formerly known as Abyssinia, where they got their name.
Instead, recent studies show that this breed might have originated from the coast of the Indian Ocean and some parts of Southeast Asia. From there, these cats were brought to England and were refined to be the breed that we know today.
