Blueberries are popular berries that both kids and adults love. Whether you mix it in your desserts or have it on its own, these tiny juicy gems can be enjoyed in countless possible ways.

And did you know that dogs love the sweet, tangy taste of blueberries, too? Like us, your dog can enjoy all the wonderful health benefits that this juicy berry has to offer.

How healthy are blueberries?

Considered as a superfood, blueberries are packed with nutrients and vitamins like:

  • Antioxidants, to help strengthen your dog’s immune system and contribute to his heart health
  • Vitamin C, to protect your dog’s cells from damage and boost iron absorption
  • Vitamin K, to aid blood clotting and to maintain healthy bones
  • Fiber, to aid in better digestion

Blueberries are generally low in calories, with less than 100 calories per cup of serving. And compared to other fruits, these berries have lower sugar content and can be fed even to diabetic dogs.

How much is too many for dogs?

Because these juicy berries are high in fiber, feeding your dog with too many blueberries can result in stomachache and diarrhea. If ever you grow blueberries in your garden, keep an eye out on your dog to prevent him from overeating this fruit.

Also, we recommend that you avoid feeding your dog with artificial blueberry flavorings and other blueberry products with added sugar. These added chemicals will do more harm than good to your dog’s health.

How to feed blueberries to your dog

Small and easy to munch on, blueberries can be fed to your dog as is—as a treat. If you’re using frozen ones, be sure to thaw them first to avoid choking. For smaller dogs, you may need to cut the berries up first before feeding it to them.

Remember to ask your vet about the proper serving size of blueberries specific to your dog. Alternatively, you can give your dog a healthy dose of blueberry goodness with Wishbone Pet Foods. Read our labels and discover what other fruits and herbs are included in our gourmet recipes.
