A well-loved herb originating from the Mediterranean region, rosemary is commonly used to add a piney, citrusy flavor to steaks, soups, sauces, and many other fish and poultry recipes.

But did you know that aside from humans, cats and dogs also enjoy the lovely, refreshing flavor and numerous health benefits of rosemary? Read on to find out more about feeding rosemary to your furkids.

How healthy is rosemary?

Classified as non-toxic by the ASPCA, this fragrant herb is a good source of vitamins A and C, iron, calcium, folate, and manganese. Feeding your furkids with just the right amount of rosemary can help:

  • improve digestion
  • protect your pets from free radicals due to antioxidants
  • fight infections due to its antibacterial, antifungal, and antiseptic properties
  • reduce inflammation and swelling
  • protect and improve eyesight
  • improve skin and coat health

How much is too much?

If consumed in small portions, rosemary is a safe and beneficial herb that your furkids can savor and enjoy. Use it as a flavor enhancer to your chosen cat or dog food.

However, like most things, too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. If your furkid eats this herb in high amounts, it can become dangerous. Signs and symptoms to watch out for include:

  • upset stomach
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • depression, if the nervous system was affected

Remember to consult your veterinarian first before giving fresh or dried rosemary to your furkids.

How to feed rosemary to your furkids

Like any other food that you want to introduce and include to your furkid’s meal, remember to start off with very small portions. This way, you can easily see if the herb has a negative effect on him.

To serve rosemary, use your vet’s recommended amount and finely chop fresh or dried ones into small pieces then sprinkle it on top of your furkid’s favorite meal.
