Happy National Trivia Day!

Because we love pets as much as you do, we’re celebrating this awesome holiday with cool dog trivia.

Read the first of our two-part blog special and get yourself equipped with these fun facts about the man’s best friend:

  1. Dogs are the oldest domesticated animal. In a grave at Oberkassel in Bonn, Germany, fossils of humans and dogs buried together around 14,000 years ago were uncovered. This provides one of the earliest evidences of domestication of dogs.
  2. Newborn puppies are blind, deaf, and toothless. Even without a sense of hearing and sight, newborn puppies can find and approach their mothers using the heat sensors on their noses.
  3. Dogs are not entirely colorblind. A dog’s vision includes shades of white, black, gray, greenish-yellow, yellow, and blue.

4. The Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog breed in the United States. According to the American Kennel Club, the Labrador Retriever has been reigning as the number one US dog breed since 1991.

5. Dogs are smart animals. They can learn more than 1,000 words, can count, solve simple math problems, and even detect cancer and changes in blood sugar in humans.

6. Having a pet offers health benefits. There are service dogs that aid humans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); anxiety and depression; autism; blindness; mobility impairment; and epilepsy.

7. Chihuahuas are the smallest dog breed in the world. They can weigh as little as 4 pounds and be as short as 6 inches.

8. The Greyhound is the fastest dog breed. Their speed reaches up to 45 miles per hour. The only land animal that can run faster than a Greyhound is a cheetah.

9. Obesity is the most common nutritional problem in dogs. Obesity is a big deal because it may cause shorter life expectancy, heart problems, arthritis, diabetes, thyroid problems, liver diseases, skin problems, increased risk of infections, and even cancer.

10. Many people believe dogs are carnivores, but they are actually omnivores. Dogs can also benefit from nutrients in fruits and vegetables.
